Building the Next Generation of Military Leaders

The University of Kansas has a proud tradition of preparing young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. KU is one of only a select number of universities in the nation that hosts all three ROTC programs on a single campus, providing a unique environment for leadership development and military education.

Today, KU is building upon that legacy through the creation of a ROTC Center of Excellence – a bold vision that will establish a national model for developing future military leaders. The Center of Excellence will unite physical readiness, moral character, and intellectual development to prepare officers capable of leading in an increasingly complex world. By integrating world-class leadership education, innovative programming, and modern facilities, KU seeks to become the premier university-based ROTC leadership development program in the Midwest.

Three Ways to Support the KU ROTC Center of Excellence

Give to ROTC Programming - Supports leadership development, ethics education, military history, professional development, and experiential learning.

Give to ROTC Scholarships - Helps talented students overcome financial barriers and pursue a commission in the United States Armed Forces

Give to the Robinson Renovation - Transforms Robinson Center into the permanent home of the KU ROTC Center of Excellence

Programming

The COE is founded on a simple belief: America deserves leaders who are physically prepared, ethically grounded, intellectually curious, and committed to serving something greater than themselves.

Physical Excellence:  Military leadership begins with personal discipline and resilience. Through a partnership with the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Lab, KU ROTC cadets and midshipmen will have access to advanced training methods, coaching, and performance development programs designed to enhance physical readiness and build lifelong habits of health, fitness, and leadership. The goal is not simply to pass a fitness test, but to cultivate officers who lead by example and are prepared for the physical demands of military service.

Moral & Ethical Leadership:  The most difficult decisions military leaders face are often not tactical – they are moral. The Center of Excellence will support a new leadership and ethics curriculum, including a first-year seminar focused on critical thinking, ethical decision-making, leadership principles, and service to others. Students will examine real-world leadership challenges, learn how to navigate uncertainty and adversity, and develop the character necessary to lead with integrity.

Intellectual Formation: The challenges facing today's military leaders require more than technical expertise. The Center of Excellence will expand opportunities for cadets and midshipmen to study military history, strategy, leadership, and national security. Courses examining the American culture of war from World War II to the present will help students understand the historical, political, and ethical dimensions of military service. By connecting classroom learning with practical leadership experiences, KU will prepare officers capable of critical thought, sound judgment, and strategic decision-making.

Scholarships: Expanding Access to Service

Every year, talented students arrive at the University of Kansas with a desire to serve their nation as future military officers. While some receive highly competitive national ROTC scholarships, only a limited number of incoming students are awarded those scholarships by the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force.  Many outstanding young men and women who possess the character, leadership potential, and commitment to military service begin their ROTC journey without significant financial assistance – and for some, the cost of higher education becomes a barrier to answering a call to serve.

The KU ROTC Center of Excellence seeks to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent talented students from pursuing a commission and a life of service. Donor-funded scholarships provide critical support during a student's first year at KU, helping bridge the gap until additional ROTC scholarship opportunities become available through their respective service. For many students, a first-year scholarship can mean the difference between pursuing their dream of military service or choosing another path.

Donor-funded support makes a tangible difference. Initiatives such as the Taylor-Feifer Jayhawk Battalion Leadership Excellence Award, which provides commissioning uniforms for Army ROTC cadets, demonstrate the powerful impact philanthropy can have on future military leaders. A KU ROTC scholarship is more than financial aid—it is an investment in a future officer, a future leader, and a future servant of our nation.

Robinson Center: The Home of the KU ROTC Center of Excellence

To match the caliber of our cadets, midshipmen, and programming, the University of Kansas is pursuing a transformative renovation of Robinson Center. This project will create a modern, consolidated home for all KU ROTC programs while preserving the building's longstanding connection to military education and service.

The renovated facility will feature modern classrooms and leadership laboratories, collaborative spaces for joint-service training, dedicated areas for mentoring and professional development, and enhanced physical training capabilities that support the Center of Excellence's mission of developing future military leaders. More than a building, Robinson Center will serve as a visible symbol of KU's commitment to leadership, service, and national defense. It will be a place where future soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, and guardians learn together, train together, and prepare to lead together.

The renovated facility will reflect the excellence, professionalism, and sense of purpose that define the KU ROTC experience while providing a premier environment for leadership development for generations to come.

Join the Mission

The vision for the KU ROTC Center of Excellence is ambitious: to create the nation's premier university-based environment for developing future military leaders. Achieving that vision will require the support of alumni, veterans, military families, corporate partners, and friends of the university who believe in the importance of leadership, character, and service.

Together, we can create a Center of Excellence that develops leaders of character, strengthens our armed forces, and honors KU's longstanding commitment to service. Through scholarships, innovative programming, and the transformation of Robinson Center, donors will help shape generations of Jayhawks who will go on to serve our nation in uniform and beyond.
